What does the day look like?
The day is not 90% studio visits, biennials, buying masterpieces, and placing paintings on white walls. The conceptual and aesthetic part is roughly 15% to 20% of the working year.
The other 80% to 85% is paperwork, money, and logistics: writing loan requests, negotiating loan fees, tracking indemnity and insurance values, writing 150-word wall texts, 50-word object labels, catalogue essays and grant proposals, entering accession numbers, provenance and location history into TMS by Gallery Systems, EMu, or Vernon CMS, and managing exhibition budgets in Microsoft Excel. A normal week can be 37.5 hours, but install weeks can become 12-hour or 14-hour days, including weekends and night shifts.
