What does the day look like?
The day starts with intake: you collect background documents, run baseline need surveys, log contact history and check eligibility for municipal or charitable programmes. Then you support qualified case managers by booking appointments, arranging transport to medical or legal services, tracking attendance and doing routine welfare checks. Much of the time goes on government paperwork: housing registers, disability allowance filings and food support vouchers. In sheltered or group homes you coach budgeting, meal preparation, medication reminders and transit navigation.
Everything is logged daily in case management databases: Liquidlogic, Mosaic and CareFirst in the United Kingdom, Penelope, CaseWorks or provincial systems in Canada. Full time is 37 hours to 40 hours per week, and residential care, youth crisis centres and supported living run 24-hour rotas, so 8 hours overnight sleep-in shifts and weekend rotas are mandatory. About 35% of the day is face-to-face client contact, and 65% is notes, compliance reports, inter-agency calls and travel between sites.
