What does the day look like?
You start on the gym floor with inductions: you show and correct technique on resistance machines, free weights, treadmills, stationary bicycles, rowing machines, stair climbers and cable stations, run warm-ups and explain safety rules. You use tape measures, skinfold calipers, blood pressure units, heart-rate monitors, first aid kits and automated external defibrillators, and you help sell memberships or personal training blocks.
You record member data in Mindbody, EZFacility Trainer Management System, BioEx Systems Exercise Expert, DietMaster, Myzone, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook and the gym customer database. Direct coaching is 40% to 60% of paid floor hours. The rest is inductions, cleaning, equipment checks, admin, cover for absent colleagues, retention calls and social media. Work is shift based with early starts from around opening, late finishes at closing, weekend rotas and split shifts. Nights are rare except lone working in 24-hour clubs. Work is often part time, casual or self-employed class cover, with 32% working full-time hours in Australia.
