What does the day look like?
The daily workload centers on structured research support and manuscript preparation. Tasks include systematic literature searches across Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar, alongside screening studies against PRISMA protocols. You manage bibliographic citations in Zotero, Mendeley, and EndNote, and format manuscripts to meet APA 7th edition, IEEE, Chicago 17th edition, or Vancouver guidelines. You also clean raw tabular data in Microsoft Excel, run descriptive statistics or regressions in IBM SPSS Statistics, R, or Stata, check integrity in Turnitin and iThenticate, and upload files to Editorial Manager, ScholarOne Manuscripts, or Open Journal Systems.
While newcomers often expect 80 percent of their time to involve formulating theories and co-authoring prose, 85 percent of the working day is actually consumed by technical formatting, verifying citations, tracking down missing DOIs, and adjusting Excel tables. Substantive scientific writing or conceptual debate occupies at most 15 percent of an assistant's routine. Standard hours range from 37.5 to 40 hours per week for full-time staff, and 10 to 20 hours per week under student-assistant contracts. There are no night shifts, though grant deadlines and manuscript revisions bring occasional evening or weekend work.
