What does the day look like?
Your workday involves seeing 25 to 40 patients in face-to-face, video, or phone appointments, with each consultation typically lasting 10 to 15 minutes in public healthcare clinics. You diagnose acute infections, manage chronic conditions like hypertension and Type 2 diabetes, oversee routine vaccinations, and carry out minor procedures like wound suturing, joint injections, and ECG interpretation. Daily tools include stethoscopes, dermatoskoplari, and diagnostic sets, alongside Electronic Health Record (EHR) software such as EMIS Web, SystmOne, Epic Systems, Medesk, or MedData.
Only about 15% of the day deals with complex diagnostic mysteries or psychiatric care; 50% is routine management of chronic lifestyle diseases, and 35% is clinical administration and data entry. While standard contracts require 37.5 to 40 hours per week, doctors spend an additional 8 to 12 hours weekly on documentation, test reviews, and referral letters. Shifts are usually 08:00 to 18:00, but out-of-hours evening, weekend, or urgent on-call duties are assigned on a rota basis.
