What does the day look like?
Your day usually runs on standard office hours, but evening events and travel are frequent. Shift work is essentially absent; you may be on call for weather, safety, or PR crises. Based on executive-director job descriptions from Pulaski County, Explore Siouxland, Visit Jackson Hole, and Tourism Prince George, roughly 15–25% of the day is visible "destination promotion" — events, media, partner meetings — while 40–50% goes to budget, board governance, staff, and reporting, and 20–30% to fundraising, political and community relations, and compliance. Tools include Microsoft Office, CRM and digital-marketing stacks, grant-administration workflows, and sometimes destination-research platforms; DMC managing directors also use P&L systems, supplier-contract platforms, and event-logistics software. Board reporting, annual budget preparation and fiscal control, hiring and evaluating staff, overseeing the brand and marketing plan, and liaising with government and industry stakeholders make up most of the job — and most of it is not the glamorous part.
