What does the day look like?
Contracted working hours run 40 to 45 hours per week across 4 or 5 days. A typical week splits into 50% to 70% direct patient care and surgery, and 30% to 50% clinical governance and practice administration. You review complex charts, audit schedule 2 and 3 controlled drug registers for ketamine, buprenorphine, methadone, and fentanyl, and evaluate P&L statements. Daily software and tools include IDEXX Neo, IDEXX Cornerstone, Covetrus Provet Cloud, ezyVet, Merlin, RoboVet, IDEXX VetLab Station, Catalyst One, and Mindray ePM12M Vet monitors.
The routine is far from full-time surgery: 35% of your day goes to consultations and surgeries, 30% to digital charting and lab reviews, 20% to rota management and staff supervision, and 15% to pharmacy reconciliations and inventory orders. Because statutory practice accountability sits with you, emergency on-call escalation, weekend coverage on a 1-in-4 rota, and late stays for emergency surgical interventions are standard.
