What does the day look like?
A standard clinic day shift lasts 8 to 10 hours, while 24-hour emergency hospitals operate on rotating 10 to 12 hour day, night, and weekend shifts. On-call duties are common in rural clinics. The gentle, glamorous part of the job — petting and comforting calm animals — accounts for only 10 to 15 percent of the day. The rest is strenuous, dirty clinical labor.
Between 40 and 50 percent of the shift is heavy sanitation: scrubbing patient cages, mopping treatment ward floors with chlorhexidine, F10, or accelerated hydrogen peroxide, cleaning feces, urine, blood, and vomit, washing contaminated laundry, and disposing of biohazards into yellow clinical waste bags. Another 25 to 30 percent is spent physically restraining terrified or aggressive dogs and cats during venipuncture and injections, using basket muzzles, cat restraint bags, towel wraps, and bite-resistant leather gloves. The remaining 10 to 15 percent involves shaving surgical fields with size 40 clipper blades, sterilizing tools in Tuttnauer or Midmark steam autoclaves, restocking inventory, and logging patient records into IDEXX Cornerstone, Covetrus Pulse, ezyVet, Merlin, VetZ EasyVET, or 1C:Veterinariya software.
