What does the day look like?
A veterinary pharmaceutical scientist works in corporate discovery laboratories, contract research organizations (CROs), or regulatory offices. About 45% of the day is dedicated to drafting scientific documents and regulatory submissions, including study protocols (Target Animal Safety - TAS, TABST) under VICH guidelines and EU or US FDA NADA/INAD dossiers. Another 25% is spent processing bioanalytical data and modeling PK/PD parameters using Phoenix WinNonlin, SAS, and GraphPad Prism. Cross-functional team meetings take up 20% of your schedule. Direct contact with animals accounts for only 10% of the role, far less than the 90% many students imagine.
Working hours are a standard 38 to 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with no overnight clinic rotations. The schedule occasionally includes evening calls between European headquarters (Ingelheim, Lyon, Basel) and US research centers (New Jersey, Michigan, Missouri). On-call duties occur only during critical in-life animal toxicology trials. Daily laboratory and monitoring work also involves running HPLC-MS/MS machinery and auditing veterinary eCRF files in Medidata Rave or Veeva Vault Animal Health.
