What does the day look like?
Your standard work week is 40 hours, spent almost entirely in an engineering design office. The creative part people imagine—designing active reactor cores and running advanced physics models—takes only about 15% to 20% of your daily time. During this share, you run neutronics and fuel depletion calculations using MCNP, CASMO, SIMULATE, SCALE, or Serpent, and analyze thermal-hydraulics or loss-of-coolant accidents using RELAP5, TRACE, COBRA-TF, or ANSYS Fluent, alongside structural simulations in ABAQUS and ANSYS Mechanical.
Between 50% and 55% of your workday is dedicated to technical report writing, safety analysis documentation, regulatory responses, and quality assurance checklists. Another 25% to 30% goes to multidisciplinary design reviews and coordination meetings with equipment vendors and clients. Design engineers work regular daytime hours. However, engineers supporting plant operations temporarily shift to rotating 12-hour shifts during scheduled refuelling outages, which occur every 18 to 24 months.
