What does the day look like?
Only about 5% of your time is spent on high-stress events like handling reactor scrams or core emergencies. Around 60% of your day is administrative compliance and paperwork: reviewing Limiting Conditions for Operation (LCOs), verifying Technical Specifications under 10 CFR 50.36, authorizing lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) permits for maintenance teams, reviewing chemistry logs, and maintaining the master control room logbook. Another 25% involves routine operational oversight, such as shift handovers, observing reactivity manipulations, and briefing operators on surveillance tests for turbine valves and diesel generators. The remaining 10% is spent in full-scope replica simulators running accident scenarios like LOCA, SGTR, and SBO.
You work with SCADA networks, Distributed Control Systems (DCS) such as Ovation or Siemens TELEPERM XS, SPDS displays, and core monitoring software like SIMULATE and BEACON. Operations run 24/7 on rotating 8-hour or 12-hour shifts (such as 2 day shifts, 2 night shifts, followed by 4 or 5 days off), with a 5-day simulator rotation every 5 or 6 weeks. Under fatigue rules like US 10 CFR Part 26, work is legally capped at 16 hours in any 24-hour window, 26 hours in 48 hours, and 72 hours in 7 days.
