What does the day look like?
You define how the model should behave: write product requirements and acceptance criteria, set scope and safety boundaries, specify refusal behaviour, and prioritise the backlog with engineers. You use Jira or Linear, Confluence or Notion, and Figma. You also review evaluations and error cases in LangSmith or Weights and Biases, then check usage and quality metrics with SQL, dashboards, Amplitude, Mixpanel or PostHog. Customer interviews, pricing, launch coordination and support readiness are part of the job. You may read engineering proposals on GitHub, but you do not train models day to day.
The part people imagine—telling the model what to do—is roughly 1/3 of the day. Writing, meetings, metric reviews, stakeholder alignment and launch operations take roughly 2/3. O*NET reports that 65% of workers in the neighbouring occupation work more than 40 hours per week, while 33% work 40 hours. There are no rostered shifts or night shifts. There is no standing night rota, though launches and model-behaviour incidents can bring evening or weekend work.
