What does the day look like?
Most of the day is spent managing people, money, delivery and risk rather than training models. You set the AI roadmap with product and executive leaders, approve model approaches and compute budgets, hire and review engineers and scientists, run delivery routines, manage vendors and cloud contracts, and sign off evaluations and release gates. You also own production-model incidents and report on safety and regulatory duties such as the EU AI Act.
You work around Python, PyTorch or TensorFlow, MLflow or Kubeflow, AWS SageMaker, Azure Machine Learning or Google Cloud Vertex AI, Databricks or Snowflake, Kubernetes, Docker, Git, GitHub and Jira. Reviewing code, designs and prototypes takes about 10% to 20% of the day; management takes most of it. Work is usually 40 to 50 hours per week in an office or hybrid pattern. There is no shift roster, but a customer-facing model failure can put you on call at night.
