What does the day look like?
You normally work around 40 hours a week, on-site or in a hybrid arrangement. You write experiment code with Python, JAX and Flax, PyTorch, TensorFlow, NumPy, or SciPy; review code through Git; and train models on cloud GPU and TPU clusters using tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Apache Spark. You also design mathematical models, build benchmarks, evaluate results, and debug failure modes.
Inventing a new method is the smaller, glamorous part. Most hours go into reading papers, coding experiments, waiting for compute, checking results, writing papers, and responding to reviewers. There are no shifts, on-call duties, or night rota, but workloads peak before conference submission deadlines.
