What does the day look like?
You build training and inference pipelines, version data and models, deploy models behind APIs, monitor accuracy, latency, drift and cost, run retraining and rollback, do code review and join incident response. The named stack is Python, PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, MLflow, Kubeflow, Docker, Kubernetes, Apache Spark, Apache Kafka, Airflow, Git, Jira, Amazon Web Services SageMaker, Microsoft Azure Machine Learning and Google Cloud Vertex AI.
Designing a new model architecture is a small share of senior time. Most of the day is data plumbing, evaluation, deployment, monitoring and fixing what broke. The reference week is 37.5 hours, with on-call rotations for production incidents. Night work is on-call response rather than shifts, except in teams supporting live consumer products across time zones.
