What does the day look like?
Only 15% to 20% of your day involves strategic financial problem-solving such as designing risk models or advising executives. The remaining 80% to 85% is spent wrangling and cleansing raw policy extracts from client data warehouses, reconciling claims transaction databases and run-off triangles, debugging runtime errors in modeling software, formatting regulatory disclosures, and writing audit trails. You work daily with Microsoft Excel and advanced VBA, Prophet, Mo.net, GGY AXIS, Moses, ResQ, R, Python (pandas, numpy, scipy), SQL, SAS, and Microsoft PowerPoint to build stochastic risk models, calculate IFRS 17 and Solvency II statutory reserves, and run cash flow stress tests.
Standard office hours are 40 to 45 hours per week. During peak financial year-end reserving and regulatory audit periods (typically January to March and September to November), workloads escalate to 55 to 65 hours per week. Night work occurs during peak delivery weeks, and weekend work happens before audit sign-offs. There is no shift work or emergency on-call duty. Junior consultants do not travel heavily; work is conducted at an office desk or in a hybrid format via Microsoft Teams and cloud modeling platforms.
