What does the day look like?
As a pricing actuary, 35% of your daily time is spent on technical mathematical pricing, rate engineering, and model validation. You build Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) using Poisson distributions for claim frequency and Gamma distributions for claim severity. Another 30% of your day involves extracting, cleansing, and reconciling policy exposure and claims loss runs from internal data warehouses and relational databases. The remaining time goes to regulatory rate filing documentation, governance, and audit preparation (15%), and weekly meetings with underwriting heads, product managers, and distribution partners to explain proposed rate adjustments and price elasticities (20%).
Your core toolkit includes specialized actuarial pricing software like Willis Towers Watson Emblem, Radar, and Earnix Price-It, alongside SAS, SQL, Python (pandas, scikit-learn, statsmodels), R (glm, mgcv, tweedie packages), and Microsoft Excel with VBA macros. Contracted working hours are 37.5 hours per week in the UK and 40 hours per week in the US and Germany. Overtime reaches 45 to 55 hours per week during peak annual reinsurance renewals, major product launches, or regulatory submission deadlines. There is no shift work, no night work, and no on-call duty.
