What does the day look like?
About 40% of your working time is spent on regulatory compliance, audits, and governance: aligning dynamic cash-flow and loss-distribution projection models with IFRS 17 or Solvency II frameworks, drafting Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA) reports, and answering auditor queries. Another 25% goes to data wrangling and pipeline debugging, where you clean policy and claims extracts and reconcile database discrepancies using SQL, SAS, Python (pandas, numpy, scipy), or R (ChainLadder package). Roughly 20% involves business communication: negotiating assumptions with underwriters, explaining reserve adjustments to finance directors, and mentoring junior analysts. Pure mathematical puzzles and theoretical probability derivations take up just 15% of your day.
Your daily toolkit includes projection software such as FIS Prophet, Moody's AXIS, Milliman Arius, ResQ, Tyche, WTW Igloo, and WTW Radar, alongside Microsoft Excel with advanced VBA macros integrated with Snowflake or Oracle data warehouses. The job is standard desk work running 37.5 to 45 hours per week. There are no night shifts or on-call duties. However, hours can reach up to 55 hours per week during quarterly and annual financial closing deadlines.
