What does the day look like?
Your day is mostly studio work at a computer: drawing 2D layouts, partition plans, reflected ceiling plans, electrical/switching schedules, and custom joinery elevations in AutoCAD, Revit, ArchiCAD, or Vectorworks. You also build 3D interiors and renders in 3ds Max, Corona Renderer, V-Ray, SketchUp, Lumion, or Enscape, then prepare presentation pages, moodboards, FF&E schedules, and finishes boards in Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Excel, Google Sheets, Canva, or Notion.
The glamorous part, meaning creative material selection, concept curation, and moodboards, is about 15% to 20% of the day. The other 80% to 85% is execution: CAD drafting, redline revisions, dimensioning, joinery detailing, 3D modelling, cataloguing material samples, supplier emails, quotes, and procurement trackers. Normal hours are 37 to 42 hours per week. There is no shift work or on-call work, but late studio evenings can happen before client presentations, tender submissions, or design fair installations; some Saturday site surveys or client meetings can also happen.
