What does the day look like?
A normal day is usually office-based, around 09:00 to 18:00, with 37.5-40 contractual hours per week. You work in Revit, AutoCAD, Rhinoceros 3D, Grasshopper, SketchUp, Enscape, Lumion, V-Ray, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and NBS Chorus. The work includes planning application packages, 2D production drawings, technical details, BIM model updates, structural and mechanical clash detection, door/window schedules, fire strategy markups and project filing.
The glamorous part is only 15%-20%: concept design, early sketching and client mood boards. The other 80%-85% is construction documents, redline corrections from senior architects, Revit family adjustments, detailing and admin. There is no shift work or on-call work, but competition submissions, planning deadlines and tender releases can push weeks to 50-60 hours. In many private UK, US and European design studios, that overtime is unpaid.
