What does the day look like?
A flight student's day runs from 07:00 to 17:00. The morning begins with pre-flight briefings evaluating METAR, TAF, and SIGMET weather charts, checking NOTAMs, filing VFR or IFR flight plans, and calculating mass, balance, and runway performance. Next comes the physical walkaround inspection to check fuel sumps, engine oil, pitot covers, and control surfaces. Flights are conducted in aircraft like the Cessna 172 Skyhawk, Piper PA-28 Archer, Diamond DA40 NG, or Diamond DA42-VI using Garmin G1000 NXi avionics or FNPT II simulators, practicing maneuvers, circuits, and navigation. After landing, a debriefing takes place with the instructor to log hours, followed by afternoon ground school covering 13 EASA ATPL theoretical subjects.
While beginners imagine spending 90 percent of their time in the sky, actual cockpit stick time accounts for only 15 to 20 percent of the day (1.5 to 2.0 flight hours). The remaining 80 to 85 percent is spent on ground preparation, calculations, checks, and theoretical study. Flying is entirely weather-dependent, requiring early dawn departures to catch calm air, mandatory night visual flights, weekend operations, and long standby waits during weather delays.
