What does the day look like?
The day is split into pre-flight briefing, dual-control flight sorties, post-flight debriefing, and logbook administration. About 20% of your day involves reviewing meteorological reports (METAR, TAF, SIGMET), NOTAM notices, mass and balance calculations, and fuel planning, followed by aircraft inspections. Another 10% to 15% is spent teaching ground school theory on aerodynamics, aviation regulations, and radio communications.
While beginners imagine soaring freely, less than 40% of your time is spent in the air. You sit in the right-hand seat of a cramped, noisy, non-air-conditioned cockpit, repeating the same 3-mile traffic pattern 10 times a day. Your hands and feet remain inches from the dual controls to catch student stalls, bad crosswind flares, and runway overshoots. The remaining 30% goes to debriefing, signing logbooks, and recording training files and aircraft defects in software like Flight Schedule Pro, Talon Systems ETA, or FlightLogger. Shifts often cover 6 days a week, starting at 06:30 and running until sunset or finishing at 23:00 for night flights.
