What does the day look like?
As an Airline Captain, you hold legal responsibility under ICAO Annex 6 for the aircraft, passengers, and cargo from engine startup to shutdown. Contrary to common perception, hands-on stick or yoke flying takes up only 3% to 5% of the total flight time during takeoff rotation and landing flare. The remaining 95% to 97% consists of systems monitoring, radiotelephony, fuel tracking, weather avoidance, checklist execution, and Crew Resource Management (CRM).
Before departure, you review Operational Flight Plans (OFP), NOTAMs, and METAR/TAF weather reports, using Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) apps like FlySmart or Boeing OPT. In the cockpit, you program the FMGS through the MCDU, configure the FCU or MCP autoflight modes, and monitor TCAS II, weather radar, and ECAM or EICAS displays. Flight duty is capped at 900 to 1,000 flight hours per year under strict regulations, involving 04:00 report times, overnight long-haul flights, and on-call standby shifts.
