What does the day look like?
Your morning starts between 07:30 and 09:00 in the Operations Control Centre (OCC), reviewing the past 24-hour on-time performance, weather disruptions, grounded aircraft (AOG), and deferred maintenance logs. Daily tools include fleet tracking and dispatch systems like Jeppesen FliteDeck, Sabre AirCentre Movement Manager, and Navblue N-Flight Planning, crew tracking engines such as AIMS Crew Tracking, and safety reporting portals including Enablon and Coruson. Between 10:00 and 13:00, you focus on updating and approving parts of the airline's Operations Manual under civil aviation oversight. During severe weather or disruptions, you direct the Emergency Response Centre.
The flying and glamorous tasks that many imagine take up only 5% to 10% of the working time (directors may fly 100 to 200 hours annually as Captain to retain their licence currency). The remaining 90% to 95% consists of regulatory audits, crew union negotiations, operating budgets, and safety risk assessments. Standard office hours run Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 18:00, but the role carries permanent 24/7/365 executive on-call responsibility.
