What does the day look like?
Work is split between Line Maintenance on the airport ramp and Base Maintenance inside hangars. On the line, technicians meet incoming aircraft at the gate, conduct walkaround inspections of tyres, brakes, and fuselage panels, review defect entries in the Aircraft Technical Logbook, and perform rapid troubleshooting against the Minimum Equipment List (MEL). In base maintenance, aircraft are grounded in hangars for weeks during heavy C-Checks and D-Checks to strip interiors, replace hydraulic actuators, and thread digital borescopes into engine cores.
Technicians use calibrated torque wrenches, multimeters, pneumatic rivet guns, safety-wire pliers, and ground power units. Every step requires consulting digital manuals like the Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM) and logging work orders in software like AMOS or SAP. Shifts typically run as 12-hour rotations, such as 2 day shifts, 2 night shifts, and 4 days off, with line maintenance heavily concentrated between 23:00 and 05:00. While beginners imagine jet engine assembly and test flights, real flight tests take 0% of your time. About 30% of the day goes to fluid checks and panel removal, 30% to mechanical assembly in cramped compartments, and 40% to legal compliance paperwork and part number verification.
