What does the day look like?
Aircraft maintenance trainees work across line maintenance on airport aprons and base maintenance in hangars. Shifts run on a 24/7/365 schedule, typically lasting 12 hours (such as 4 days on, 4 days off), with heavy line maintenance concentrated at night between 22:00 and 06:00. Daily hands-on tasks include checking tire pressure and brake wear pins, checking engine oil levels, replenishing Skydrol hydraulic fluid, twisting lockwire on critical fasteners, torquing bolts with calibrated torque wrenches, and removing dozens of access panels during scheduled inspections.
Roughly 40% of the shift is spent reading technical manuals (AMM, IPC), searching part numbers, logging tool checkouts, completing task cards in AMOS, TRAX, or SAP, and cleaning grease. The remaining 60% consists of supervised mechanical disassembly, inspection, and assembly. Work involves tarmac winds, summer apron heat exceeding 45 degrees Celsius, working at heights up to 15 metres, and entering confined fuel tanks. Legally, under EASA Part-145 and FAA regulations, an unlicensed trainee has zero signing authority and cannot release an aircraft to service; every single task must be inspected, supervised, and countersigned in your logbook by a licensed Cat B1 or Cat B2 engineer.
