What does the day look like?
A standard work week runs 37.5 to 40 hours, typically from 08:30 to 17:00. Around 30% of your day is spent running and monitoring Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) workflows using Nextflow, Snakemake, Docker, Singularity, and bash on HPC clusters or cloud environments, handling FASTQ, BAM, and VCF files. Another 25% goes to clinical integration using HL7 FHIR and ontologies like HPO and SNOMED CT, while 25% involves quality validation under ISO 15189 standards, GIAB benchmarks, and GDPR Article 9 or HIPAA compliance.
The remaining 20% of your schedule involves multidisciplinary team meetings and Molecular Tumor Boards with geneticists and oncologists to discuss variants of uncertain significance. Designing breakthrough models from scratch makes up barely 10% of the role; roughly 90% is routine pipeline troubleshooting, regression testing, and documentation. Shift work is rare, though urgent neonatal sequencing or system maintenance occasionally requires on-call duty.
