What does the day look like?
The working week runs 37.5 to 40 hours, Monday through Friday, 09:00 to 17:00 or 08:30 to 17:00. There are no night shifts, rotations, or on-call duties, with overtime restricted to study database lock periods before regulatory submissions. About 55% of your day is spent transcribing structured numerical and categorical values from paper case forms, clinic visit summaries, and laboratory PDF files into EDC systems such as Medidata Rave, Oracle Clinical One, Castor EDC, and REDCap.
Another 25% of your time goes to query management and discrepancy resolution, such as investigating out-of-range blood pressure figures or mismatched visit dates. Document tracking and Quality Control (QC) across audit trails and Trial Master File (TMF) archives take 15%. Routine tools include Microsoft Excel (VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, Pivot Tables), SharePoint, and JIRA. The theoretical bioinformatics and data science work imagined by students — coding algorithms, analyzing genomic sequences, or training machine learning models — makes up 0% of this role.
