What does the day look like?
You set the multi-year portfolio discovery strategy, decide go/no-go milestones for preclinical lead candidates, defend pre-IND and IND filing strategies before the US FDA or EMA, present pipeline milestones to the Board of Directors, venture capital syndicates and institutional investors, negotiate licensing agreements and sponsored research with academic labs and Contract Research Organisations (CROs), and manage patent defense and IP filings with patent attorneys. Tools: Benchling, Dotmatics, Rosetta, PyMOL, Nextflow pipelines, Jira Enterprise, Microsoft Project, FDA Electronic Submissions Gateway / ESG, CDER Direct.
Time split: 35% board, investor relations and capital allocation, 35% program reviews, go/no-go decisions and regulatory/IND strategy, 20% executive management, IP, legal and external pharma partnerships, 10% or less direct hands-on bioinformatics analysis and code review. No shift work. Standard week is 55 to 70 hours, with intense travel every 3 months for board meetings, investor roadshows such as J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, and FDA/EMA scientific advice hearings.
