What does the day look like?
Most of your day is meetings, not code. 80% to 85% is executive work: capex and opex budgets, contracts with AWS, Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure, roadmaps with wet-lab and drug discovery teams, hiring computational biologists and machine learning engineers, plus HIPAA, GDPR and GxP compliance and patent paperwork. Only 15% to 20% is hands-on science: reviewing pipeline code in Nextflow, Snakemake, CWL or Cromwell/WDL, and checking results from GATK, samtools, bwa, STAR, Bioconductor, Scanpy and Seurat.
The week is 45 to 55 hours. There is no hospital shift pattern. You stay responsible when a multi-terabyte WGS, single-cell RNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics or proteomics run is critical, when a regulatory filing is due, or when AWS Batch, Google Cloud Life Sciences, SLURM, Kubernetes, Docker or Singularity goes down.
