What does the day look like?
Around 60% of your day is spent on infrastructure, cloud engineering, and workflow scripting: writing pipeline definitions in Nextflow (DSL2) or Snakemake, defining tasks in WDL or CWL, and wrapping bioinformatics tools with Python and Bash scripts. Another 20% goes to containerization and compute orchestration, such as building Docker and Singularity/Apptainer images, configuring Slurm or PBS cluster parameters, and running jobs across AWS Batch, Google Cloud Batch, or Seqera Platform. About 15% is spent troubleshooting Out-Of-Memory errors, managing AWS S3 or Google Cloud Storage buckets, and running automated QC with MultiQC and FastQC.
Only 5% of the role involves biological analysis. Beginners often imagine discovering cures or inspecting 3D protein structures, but the actual work is almost entirely systems and software engineering for genetic data. You typically work a standard 40-hour week from Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 18:00, with occasional on-call rotations in accredited clinical diagnostic laboratories.
