What does the day look like?
A Second Officer serves as the primary navigational watchkeeper and navigation officer on board. 65% of your working hours are spent standing bridge watches underway — two 4-hour watches per 24 hours (8 hours total), traditionally the 12:00–16:00 watch and the mandatory 00:00–04:00 night watch. On the bridge, you monitor ARPA radars, gyrocompass, AIS, and electronic charts (ECDIS) to navigate and prevent collisions.
20% of the day goes to berth-to-berth passage planning and updating digital charts with Notices to Mariners via satellite link. 10% is dedicated to testing GMDSS emergency communications and safety gear, and 5% to paperwork. Serving as the ship's medical officer, you also manage the hospital and medicine chest. In port, you stand 6-hour or 12-hour cargo watches and command mooring winch teams on the forecastle or poop deck during berthing.
