What does the day look like?
Directly conning the ship on the bridge takes up less than 10% to 15% of your time. On the open sea, routine navigation is maintained by autopilots and watchkeeping Second and Third Officers. You take direct command of the bridge only during high-risk operations such as port arrivals and departures, canal transits, dense traffic, heavy fog, severe storms, or emergencies. Between 50% and 60% of your day is spent on administration and regulatory compliance: auditing ISM Code safety checklists, verifying MLC 2006 rest logs, preparing customs and immigration paperwork, and coordinating statutory surveys with societies like DNV or Lloyd's Register. Another 20% to 25% goes to cargo stability plans, fuel monitoring, and commercial communications, while 10% to 15% covers crew management and safety drills.
Daily bridge and office work involves Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS from Furuno, Sperry Marine, or Transas/Wärtsilä Navi-Sailor), ARPA radar, GMDSS consoles, stability software like MACS3 or CargoMax, and management systems such as AMOS or BASSnet. Deep-sea officers work rotational contracts, typically 3 to 4 months on board followed by 3 to 4 months of unpaid leave. At sea, you are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and port turnaround operations regularly require 24 to 36 hours of continuous, zero-sleep oversight.
