What does the day look like?
As the head of the hospital dietetic service, most of your day is not at the bedside but in management. You run daily delivery across acute, outpatient and community services: line-managing senior dietitians and support and admin staff, appraisals, rostering, recruitment, absence and performance cases, budget control, audit and quality improvement, complaints and incident investigations, pathway redesign, and representing the service at divisional and national meetings. The named systems are the Electronic Patient Record, e-rostering, dietetic prescribing formularies, nutritional analysis programs, and Microsoft Excel for activity and prescribing data.
The clinical residue is a minority share, but it is the hardest caseload: assessing nutritional status from anthropometry, biochemistry, dietary intake and calculated requirements, prescribing or authorising oral nutritional supplements and enteral feeds, in diabetes, renal disease, allergy, eating disorders, malnutrition, bowel disorders and critical care. The contract is a standard NHS full-time contract, with on-call participation stated in at least 1 advertised head post and weekend or on-call cover varying by trust. Night work is not routine at this grade.
