What does the day look like?
In Band 5 entry posts you work on rotation: general medicine, surgery, stroke, respiratory, care of the elderly, diabetes, oncology and paediatrics, a mix of inpatient wards and outpatient clinics. Concrete tasks are nutritional screening with MUST, anthropometry, calculation of energy, protein and fluid requirements, food fortification plans, prescribing oral nutritional supplements, calculating and monitoring enteral tube feeds via nasogastric or gastrostomy tubes, planning safe discharge for home enterally fed patients, documenting in the patient record, handover in the multidisciplinary team, and training nurses, doctors, catering staff and patients.
The 1-to-1 healthy-eating counselling a teenager imagines is 30% to 40% of the day. The rest is screening, calculations, records, ward rounds, discharge paperwork, supplement and feed ordering, audit and teaching. The contract is 37.5 hours per week. Hours are mainly daytime with weekend cover on rotation in acute trusts. Night duty as a dietitian is rare, but on-call cover for enteral and parenteral nutrition happens in larger hospitals. Tools: MUST, enteral feed products and pumps, sip feeds, food composition tables, and the hospital electronic patient record.
