What does the day look like?
You work across haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, home therapies, advanced kidney care clinics, general nephrology outpatients and inpatient wards. Each day you assess nutrition from diet histories, Subjective Global Assessment, hand grip and weight trends, review potassium, phosphate, calcium, parathyroid hormone, haemoglobin, albumin and interdialytic weight gain, then set protein at dialysis levels, fluid allowance, salt, potassium restriction, phosphate restriction with binder timing, diabetes adjustment and malnutrition support with oral supplements or enteral feeds. You record in EPIC or Cerner, analyse in Nutritics or Dietplan, screen with MUST and track dialysis lists in renal databases. You join weekly multidisciplinary ward rounds with consultants, pharmacists, psychologists and specialist nurses, plus student supervision and audit.
Direct counselling is 40% of time, records, blood review, menu and supplement ordering, liaison letters and service development are 60%. Full time NHS posts are 37.5 hours per week, days with occasional late clinic, with 0 routine nights. On call is rare in renal dietetics.
