What does the day look like?
Expect early shifts from 7:00, weekend cover on rotation and on-call review of parenteral and enteral nutrition. You assess nutritional needs, review lab tests, build care plans, factor in cultural and religious preferences, consult physicians, chart food history with allergies and medications, calculate low glycemic, gluten-free and allergen-free menus, check food safety on the ward and prepare teaching materials.
You work with weighing scales, stadiometers, skinfold calipers, bioelectrical impedance devices, blood-pressure cuffs, glucometers, enteral-feeding pumps, plus Nutritionist Pro, The Food Processor, FoodWorks, Excel and electronic health-record charting. The imagined 80% to 90% of 1-to-1 counselling is 30% to 40% in real posts, the rest is charting, lab review, calculations, rounds, safety checks and audit paperwork. Community posts run daytime weekdays with evening clinics, continuous night shifts are uncommon outside acute hospitals.
