What does the day look like?
As a hospital dietitian your day is on the wards and in outpatient clinics. You assess the patient, estimate energy and nutrient needs, write a treatment plan that can include oral supplements and tube feeds, then monitor the result and document discharge or handover. Your caseload covers general medicine and surgery, elderly care, gastroenterology, renal, diabetes, cardiology, haematology, oncology, weight management, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and bowel disorders. You work in a team with doctors, nurses, catering and pharmacy, and you teach ward staff how to screen for malnutrition.
Writing menus is less than half the day. Most time goes to assessment, notes, catering and pharmacy orders, arranging follow-up, audit data entry and record-keeping. The tools are specialist anthropometric equipment, nutrition analysis software, electronic patient records and databases, diet sheets, teaching resources and ordering systems for therapeutic diets and feeds. In the United Kingdom full time is 37.5 hours per week, with weekend rota duty of about 1 day every 8 weeks and cover of 2 of 6 bank holidays in 1 year. Night shifts are not standard, while private practice adds evenings and weekends around clients.
