What does the day look like?
Your day is programme work. You develop and deliver community nutrition interventions for children under 5 and families, run and evaluate programmes in nurseries, pre-schools, Family Hub sites, schools and communities, train multi-agency teams, upskill community practitioners and volunteers, recruit participants, plan and deliver accredited courses such as Nutrition Skills for Life, and collate metrics, bids for funding and reports on national campaigns.
Your tools are computer nutritional analysis programmes, routine data collection and assessment of health and nutritional status, menu and diet planning tools, food-service monitoring, educational materials, and standard office and surveillance datasets. No single commercial brand is specified. Writing meal plans for clients is a small share of the day, mainly public contact in junior community posts. The larger share, especially at senior grades, is policy shaping, training others, monitoring, evaluation, report writing and coordination with councils, health boards and non-governmental organisations. Standard full-time hours are 37.5 per week, with some evenings or weekends possible. Hospital-style shift, night and on-call work is not the norm, though fixed-term and part-time contracts tied to short-term programme money are common.
