What does the day look like?
As a research dietitian your day is delivering a clinical trial protocol exactly as written: you screen people against inclusion and exclusion criteria, take consent where delegated, deliver the diet or nutrition intervention, complete case report forms and electronic capture such as REDCap, answer data queries under ALCOA principles, and follow up to keep participants in the study. At centres such as Leicester Diabetes Centre, Fylde Coast Clinical Research and Nottingham University Hospitals this also means measuring habitual diet and eating behaviour, and at senior level running a metabolic kitchen and a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scanner and helping with protocol design.
Your tools are Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, ESHA Research The Food Processor, Axxya Systems Nutritionist Pro, FoodWorks, NutriBase, 24-hour recall and food frequency questionnaire tools, bioelectrical impedance machines, glucometers and metabolic carts. In a delivery post direct counselling is 30% to 40% of the day, and documentation, data entry, query handling, governance and liaison is 60% to 70%. Hours are daytime, 37.5 hours per week full time in NHS posts, with part time and job share advertised. There are no routine night shifts, with occasional early or late clinics for participant visits.
