What does the day look like?
As an intern your day is ward work next to a supervisor: screening with the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool, menu checks, calculating enteral feed volumes, writing notes in the electronic patient record, monitoring the kitchen and handing over to the team. The full dietitian job in O*NET 29-1031.00 is wider: assess nutritional needs, review laboratory tests, counsel individuals and groups, advise patients and families on meal plans, include cultural and religious preferences, agree diet restrictions with physicians, build low glycemic, low histamine, gluten-free and allergen-free menus, and supervise meal preparation.
Named tools are Nutritionist Pro, FoodWorks, NutriBase, DietMaster, Food Processor by ESHA Research, Nutritrac, MNT Assistant, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, glucometers, bioelectric impedance machines, skinfold calipers, upright scales, metabolic carts and ketone meters. Counselling motivated clients is 20% to 30% of intern time, the rest is screening, notes, calculations, menu corrections and audit. Hours are daytime clinical shifts, 37.5 hours per week full time in the National Health Service, with weekend catering cover on some rotations. Night work is rare. On-call is rare at intern level.
