What does the day look like?
You take histories, measure height and weight, plot growth charts, calculate needs into feeding plans, follow inpatients, run outpatient clinics and counsel parents and carers. Caseloads include faltering growth, food allergy including cow milk protein allergy, coeliac disease, restricted eating, feeding difficulties, cystic fibrosis, diabetes including insulin pump therapy, gastroenterology, neonatal care, oncology, ketogenic therapy, home parenteral nutrition and home enteral tube feeding.
About 1/3 of the day is talking with children about food, 2/3 is measurement, calculation, notes, prescribing specialist infant formulas and enteral feeds, arranging home delivery, budget monitoring, training ward staff and parents, audit and liaison with paediatricians, nurses, speech and language therapists, pharmacists and catering. Tools are Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel plus hospital systems for prescribing, growth charting and enteral feed ordering. Usual contract is 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday daytime in clinics, for example 9am to 5pm at Cambridge University Hospitals. Inpatient cover can include weekend and bank holiday rotas. Night duty is uncommon and on-call is limited except in metabolic and parenteral nutrition centres. Cambridge University Hospitals reports up to 8 dietitian-led clinics per month plus support to 85 consultant-led clinics per month.
