What does the day look like?
Your day is running cultural programmes: booking flights, hotel blocks and transport for delegations, artists and speakers, drafting grant agreements and contracts, reconciling vendor invoices against programme budgets, writing press releases, newsletters and social media posts, managing venue setup, audio-visual checks and guest lists for exhibitions or forums, and compiling monitoring and reporting data. Your tools are Microsoft 365 (Excel for budget reconciliation, Word, Teams), SAP or Oracle ERP for purchase orders and payments, Salesforce or Microsoft Dynamics, British Council Scorecard and Qualtrics, Hootsuite and Meta Business Suite.
The glamorous part is 15% of the day: ambassador receptions, VIP dinners, time with artists. The other 85% is paperwork: chasing missing receipts, updating Excel trackers, drafting risk assessments, answering public emails, setting up chairs and testing microphones. You work 40 hours per week, usually 09:00 to 18:00, with 2 to 4 evenings per month from 18:00 to 21:00 for openings or festivals, plus weekend work during major multi-day festivals compensated with TOIL. There are no night shifts and no on-call duties.
