What does the day look like?
Your day is press releases, setting up ambassador interviews, op-eds, monitoring foreign coverage on Meltwater, Cision, Brandwatch, Talkwalker and Google Alerts, briefing journalists and running press conferences. You select candidates, check compliance, run orientation and alumni outreach for Fulbright, Chevening, DAAD, Türkiye Bursları and El-Yurt Umidi, and you curate film festivals, art exhibitions, literary translations, language centres such as American Spaces, British Council, Goethe-Institut and Institut Français, plus music tours. You track hostile narratives, run audience sentiment analysis, issue counter-disinformation fact sheets, write grant proposals, disburse small grants to local NGOs and report metrics to the ministry. Publishing runs on Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Meta Business Suite, Adobe Premiere Pro, Canva and WordPress, cables on SMART, Signal and Telegram, grants on SAMS, Salesforce and Microsoft Dynamics 365.
Usual hours are 08:30 to 17:30, 40 hours per week, rising to 60 to 70 hours per week during ministerial visits and summits. You spend 2 to 4 evenings per week at receptions, dinners and openings, with press cover on a 24/7 on-call roster. Visible glamour — receptions, visiting dignitaries, VIP dinners, ribbon-cutting — is 15% to 20% of the day, while 80% to 85% is grant agreements, clearing statements through 4 layers of bureaucracy, budget sheets, event logistics such as chairs and audio cables, cable logging and post-event reports.
