What does the day look like?
You act for the sending state in the receiving state: you negotiate with the host foreign ministry and other ministries, you write political and economic analysis back to the capital by cable, you manage mission staff and the mission budget, you run protocol and representational hosting, you cover consular crises involving detained or distressed nationals and evacuations, you promote trade and investment, and you handle press and public diplomacy. Named tools are the ministry cable and dispatch system, secure government communications, the diplomatic passport and protocol precedence lists, and classified holdings; the rest runs on standard office and reporting systems.
There is no shift pattern at this rank and no overtime log; you stay on call at all hours, representational dinners sit in the evenings, and crises bring night and weekend work without notice. Summits and ceremonies are the small visible part of the calendar; management, reading, drafting, and meetings take the large part of working time.
