What does the day look like?
About 85% of your day is spent cleaning, auditing, and wrangling operational data in Microsoft Excel. You chase regional facility managers, procurement leads, and HR teams to collect electricity bills in kilowatt-hours, gas invoices, diesel fuel receipts, corporate flight manifests, and waste consignment notes. You format spreadsheets using VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, and pivot tables, and enter audited figures into ESG reporting platforms like Workiva, Sphera, Sweep, Persefoni, Enablon, or Microsoft Sustainability Manager. You also align disclosures with GRI, CSRD/ESRS, ISSB, and CDP standards and fill out supplier questionnaires for EcoVadis or Sedex.
Only about 15% of your time involves drafting narrative sections or researching regulatory developments. The job follows a standard 40-hour workweek, Monday through Friday, with no night shifts or on-call duties. However, during the reporting crunch from January to May, weeks regularly expand to 50 to 60 hours to satisfy audit deadlines.
