What does the day look like?
The working day is spent at an office desk during standard 40 to 45 hours per week schedules (typically 09:00 to 18:00). There are no night shifts and no regular on-call duties, though cyclical overtime occurs from March to June during European reporting seasons. Between 60 and 70 percent of the day is routine data processing: reading 200-to-500-page corporate annual reports, sustainability disclosures, CDP filings, and CSRD documents to extract Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, and board diversity metrics into Microsoft Excel and relational databases.
Another 15 to 20 percent involves running scoring and quantitative models based on GRI, SASB/ISSB, TCFD, and EU Taxonomy standards. About 10 percent is spent monitoring regulatory fines, labor strikes, and lawsuits, while 5 to 10 percent goes to writing 2-to-5-page research notes for portfolio managers. Work is performed using Bloomberg Terminal (ESG, PORT, FA), FactSet, Refinitiv Eikon / LSEG Workspace, MSCI ESG Manager, Morningstar Sustainalytics Global Access, alongside SQL, Python (pandas), Microsoft Power BI, and Tableau.
