What does the day look like?
An ESG manager works a standard 40 hours per week in corporate offices with zero night shifts and zero on-call duties. Only 10% of the role is the glamorous part imagined by teenagers, such as launching renewable energy projects, developing green initiatives, or planting trees. The remaining 90% consists of auditing raw supply chain spreadsheets, calculating emission factors, answering compliance questionnaires from corporate lenders, and reconciling regulatory report drafts with legal and accounting teams.
Daily operations involve collecting Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas activity data, conducting double materiality assessments, and drafting disclosures under EU CSRD, ESRS, GRI, or ISSB frameworks. Tasks are carried out using specialized platforms like Persefoni, Watershed, Sphera, Sweep, Workiva, SAP Sustainability Control Tower, Microsoft Sustainability Manager, and advanced Microsoft Excel pivot models, alongside MSCI ESG Manager, S&P Capital IQ Pro, and CDP Portal. Overtime surges during annual reporting cycles from February to April, when non-financial disclosures must be filed alongside financial audits.
