What does the day look like?
An ESG Director spends 50 percent of the day on audit, data aggregation, and corporate bureaucracy: reviewing internal audit trails, reconciling supplier energy bills, and managing data assurance sign-offs across finance and legal using enterprise systems like Workiva, Sphera, Persefoni, IBM Envizi, SAP Sustainability Control Tower, and Watershed. Another 45 percent goes to internal politics, committee meetings, and investor defense: negotiating emissions targets with procurement heads, presenting to the Board of Directors, and answering inquiries from institutional shareholders. The public-facing, glamorous side of visiting reforestation programmes or announcing climate pledges takes up only 5 percent of the time.
The role follows an executive schedule of 50 to 65 hours per week. There is no factory shift work or physical on-call emergency response, but hours surge heavily during annual reporting cycles (January to April) and quarterly board cycle preparations, alongside international travel for supplier audits and investor conferences.
