What does the day look like?
The standard work week is 40 hours in an office or consultancy setting. Only about 20% of your time is spent on the glamorous side: field sampling in rivers, wetlands restoration, or outdoor research. The remaining 80% is spent on spreadsheet calculations, CAD pipe layouts, reviewing discharge permits, client meetings, drafting 200-page compliance reports, and coordinating with laboratory chemists.
Core tasks involve designing wastewater treatment units, modeling water flows using EPA-SWMM, EPANET, or DHI MIKE SHE, and calculating air dispersion with AERMOD View or ADMS. In the field, you handle multi-parameter water probes, peristaltic pumps, and photoionization detectors (PID) for volatile organic compounds. Night work and on-call shifts are rare, limited to emergency spill responses or factory commissioning runs.
